About us
Formed at London’s Royal College of Music in 2005, the Erato Piano Trio is rapidly establishing a reputation as an exciting young ensemble, praised for their natural musicianship as much as for their stylistic versatility. As first prize winners of the Anglo-Czech Trust Competition they currently pursue a busy schedule of recitals in many prestigious London venues and for music societies around the UK. Their repertoire extends from the classical works of Haydn, Hummel and Mozart over the romantic masterpieces to 20th century music by Schnittke, Bloch, Piazzolla and Avner Dorman. Their interpretation of the Piano Trio by Alfred Schnittke was received enthusiastically by audiences and critics alike and led to an invitation by Professor Alexander Ivashkin, Schnittke’s close friend and biographer, to perform the work at the Centre for Russian Music in London.
The last season saw the Erato Piano Trio perform recitals at venues such as St. James Piccadilly, Lauderdale House (supported by the Elias Fawcett Trust), the Royal College of Music as well as the Martinu Hall in Prague. They also completed a hugely successful tour to Switzerland as part of which they gave their debut at Zurich's famous Tonhalle performing Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time alongside distinguished clarinettist Joan Enric Lluna.
Their schedule for the current season includes recitals for numerous UK chamber music societies, the Bath Pump Rooms as well as performances at prestigious London venues such as St. Martin in the Fields under the auspices of the Concordia Foundation. Their plans for the 2008/2009 include a recital for the Schubert Society of London, their Welsh debut at the National Gallery in Cardiff as well as a tour to Italy.
The three young musicians currently benefit from the guidance of Professor John Barstow MBE, Leonid Gorokhov, Ani Schnarch and the Chilingirian Quartet. They were also selected to perform in masterclasses with Lewis Kaplan as well as with legedary cellist and Beaux Arts Trio founder Bernard Greenhouse.
"...at the start of what I feel sure will be an interesting and successful career." Professor John Barstow MBE
"I believe that their instrumental skills and their work as a group promise a very exciting future."
Professor Leonid Gorokhov

John Paul Ekins - piano | Ilya Movchan - violin | Julia Morneweg - cello
"In line with the Society’s policy of encouraging young musicians embarking on their musical careers to play at the Society’s meetings, its Chairman, Barbara O’Connor, scored a major success by engaging the Erato Piano Trio. This ensemble played works by Mozart, Suk, Bridge and Rachmaninov. But it was in the Mendelssohn Barholdy Piano Trio in D Minor that the players really excelled themselves and delighted their audience. Ilya Movchan – violin and Julia Morneweg – cello gave excellent and sensitive performances but it was the brilliant and lively piano playing of John Paul Ekins, which gave the essential background to their wonderful music." [.. ]The Shostakovich was unusually mature and gripping for such a young group, and showed wonderful potential. Individual parts were performed with soloistic virtuosity and control, the balance showed intelligence and insight.
