


John Paul Ekins
John Paul Ekins was born in London in 1987, and began studying the piano at the age of five. He commenced his studies at the Royal College of Music Junior Department aged 11, first learning with James Lisney, and then with John Barstow. Educated at St. Paul’s School, where he was both an Academic and Music Scholar, he has won many awards and competitions, including the concerto prizes at many major London Music Festivals. While at the RCM JD he twice won the May Edwards Memorial Prize and, on leaving, the Constance Poupard Memorial Prize for Piano.
In 2005 he entered the Royal College of Music Senior Department as an undergraduate, continuing his studies with John Barstow. As a soloist, he has given numerous recitals, playing at such venues as Symphony Hall Birmingham, Fairfield Hall, Bolivar Hall and Steinway Hall. He has also participated in masterclasses with renowned pianists such as Peter Donohoe. He has participated as concerto soloist with†both the Sutton and Wandsworth Symphony Orchestras, the Oxford Studio Orchestra, the North Cherwell Sinfonia and the Redhill and Reigate Chamber Orchestra. He was recently awarded second prize in the finals of the Amy Brant International Pianoforte Competition. In 2006 he was the Kingston Young Musician of the Year and the Richmond Pianist of the Year, receiving an award from Hanna & Sons Pianos Limited. In 2007 he was the Croydon Musician of the Year and the Woking Young Musician of the Year, and performed the Gershwin Piano Concerto with Woking Symphony Orchestra in November.
This season’s highlights include recitals in London, Belfast and at the Harting and Sevenoaks Music Clubs. He is also performing Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto with the Hillingdon Philharmonic Orchestra, courtesy of the 2007 Ruislip and Northwood Festival, where he was awarded the Adjudicator's Prize. This consisted of a scholarship from the pianist Andrzej Pikul to attend his Summer Academy of Music in Krakov, Poland, and he returned in October to give recitals in Zakopane and Katowice. In March he performed Beethoven's first Piano Concerto with Sutton Symphony Orchestra, and returns to Wandsworth Symphony Orchestra to play the Gershwin Concerto in November.
