


Julia Morneweg
was born in Cologne, Germany in 1984 and received her first cello lessons from her father at the age of twelve. She went on to study with Raphael Wallfisch and Klaus Heitz and before obtaining a Bachelor of Music Degree from the Royal College of Music in London where she studied cello with Leonid Gorokhov and piano with Kathron Sturrock. Julia has performed in many international masterclasses and received guidance from distinguished musicians such as Raphael Wallfisch, Lluis Claret, Alexander Baillie, Christiane Edinger and most notably Alexander Ivashkin.
A recent recipient of an EMI Music Foundation Award, she has given many solo performances around Germany, the UK, Belgium, Ukraine and the United States where she was invited to perform at the 2001 Tacoma International Music Festival. In 2003 she participated in a concert tour throughout Italy as a member of the Israel Soloists Ensemble where she collaborated with world famous artists such as Shlomo Mintz and Massimo Quarta. With the same ensemble she also performed as a concerto soloist in Cologne.
Recent engagements have included a recital at Charterhouse Music Festival, the Elgar and Haydn C major Cello Concertos at St. John's Smith Square, tours to Croatia and Italy with members of the chamber ensemble Fibonacci Sequence as well as engagements in Singapore and the Ukraine. In recital Julia has appeared at venues such as Holywell Music Rooms Oxford, the National Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Julia is equally in demand as a freelance orchestral player and has recently worked with the Orchestra della Scala in Milan and the Northern Sinfonia. In addition to her many performance commitments Julia also pursues a keen interest in musicology and has recently written a dissertation on Alfred Schnittke's Piano Trio which she presented to great acclaim at a major Schnittke convention at Goldsmiths College University of London in February. She currently plays on a cello by Vincenzo Ruggiero kindly placed at her disposal by Florian Leonhard, London.
